Red Cross Honors Shelton Veteran, Firefighters

CONTRIBUTEDThe Connecticut Red Cross last week honored a group of Shelton firefighters who helped residents of a Howe Avenue fire last year and a Shelton veteran who began a program to deliver gift cards to troops and military groups.

Echo Hose Fire Co. 1 and Alfred Meadows were honored by the Red Cross at its 16th annual Community Heroes Breakfast” Jan. 30 in Stamford.

Plans: ‘Phoenix’ To Rise From Howe Avenue Rubble In Shelton

FILEOne year ago today, downtown Shelton was drastically altered by a fast-moving fire that leveled a four-story building off Howe Avenue and left nearly 30 people homeless.

Twelve months later, the family who owns the building is readying plans to replace it which will soon be sent to city land use officials, their lawyer said Monday.

Meanwhile, the state’s Red Cross will honor firefighters who responded to the blaze — and led a months-long effort in aid of those displaced by it — at a Community Heroes” event this month.

Malloy: Federal Loans Available For Shelton Fire Victims

Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced Friday the approval of his request for a Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster declaration to mitigate the impact of the fire in Shelton that leveled a half-block of downtown Shelton Jan. 6.

Residents and business owners affected by the fire can now apply for low-interest SBA disaster loans.

Valley Nonprofits Helping Shelton Fire Victims

Three major Valley funders, the Valley Community Foundation, the Valley United Way and the Katharine Matthies Foundation, are helping TEAM Inc. serve the Jan. 6 Shelton fire victims.

Shortly after the Jan. 6 fire on Howe Avenue in Shelton TEAM Inc. became the lead agency in helping resettle the 29 displaced people in 23 low-income apartments above the stores destroyed in the fire.

BHCare is helping secure housing for their clients who were affected by the fire and the Red Cross helped fire victims find immediate short-term housing. The majority of the fire victims are being assisted by TEAM Inc.

Fire Marshal: Precise Cause Of Shelton Fire A Mystery

While investigators believe they know where a fast-moving fire that leveled a half-block of stores and apartments Monday began, what caused it is still a mystery, Shelton’s Fire Marshal said Friday afternoon.

More likely than not we won’t be able to determine an exact cause,” James Tortora, the fire marshal, said.

Tortora, members of his staff, and officials with the state fire marshal’s office have been sifting through the rubble of the blaze since Tuesday.

Some Shelton Fire Victims Getting Ready For New Apartments

The effort to help 28 people get back on their feet after Monday’s fire on Howe Avenue is at the point where volunteers are almost ready to start moving a few residents into new apartments.

The Valley Indy stopped by Echo Hose Hook and Ladder Co. 1 at 379 Coram Ave. Thursday morning for a brief chat with firefighter Kevin Lantowsky, who is helping to coordinate the relief effort.

Lantowsky stood inside an office off a large meeting room on the building’s second floor that has been converted into a sorting area. There were hundreds of clothing items and food, all being sorted by about a dozen volunteers.
