Gov. Dannel Malloy this week signed into law a bill that enhances penalties against people who vandalize war memorials.
The bill, “An Act Concerning Desecration of War or Veterans’ Memorials,” was proposed after a rash of thefts in the lower Naugatuck Valley of bronze plaques from war memorials.

Seymour Soccer Association is hosting a Wine & Beer Tasting benefit for local youth soccer on Saturday, May 19 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Villa Bianca located at 312 Roosevelt Drive, Rt. 34 in Seymour.
“Get Your Kicks” Tasting will offer samples of wine and beer and will draw for “you-gotta-have-them” door and raffle prizes.
Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.
Attendees will enjoy live entertainment, including acoustic tunes by Sammy Blanchette. Raffle prizes will include a 40” LCD TV, a Kindle Fire, a Boston Red Sox donated, autographed color action shot of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia accompanied by a pair of game tickets to a future Sox game at historic Fenway Park, and a week of soccer camp.

Former First Selectman Robert Koskelowski said the town’s finance board erred by creating a budget that assumes the town’s public works director will lose his job.
Seymour residents are scheduled to vote Thursday (May 17) on whether to spend $52 million to run the town and school districts next year.
Voters rejected the original spending plan when it went out to referendum May 3.

Ansonia resident Kristie Kennedy will donate a kidney to her neighbor and friend, Paul Lucuk, this week.
Lucuk, 51, suffers from stage 5 chronic kidney disease. The two are scheduled for surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital on May 17, according to a New Haven Register article.

Spooner House invites willing walkers and runners too, to the Derby Greenway on Saturday, May 19 starting at 9 a.m. (rain or shine) to take part in the 15th annual Walk for the Hungry and Homeless.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and walkers may begin whenever they arrive.
Participants are asked to make donations in any amount that fits their budget, ask others to sponsor them for additional funds and seek matching donations from employers.
