Two hundred years ago, the U.S., a young, 18-state republic, was days away from declaring war on Great Britain, an empire whose dominion spanned the globe.

The resulting War of 1812 is probably best known as the war that inspired the United States’ national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.”

But it was also the first major test for the country’s fledgling Navy.

If Derby residents are worried about a steep increase in taxes next year, they didn’t show it during a public hearing on the proposed 2012-2013 budget Monday.

Just three members of the public offered comments on the budget, along with Derby Public Schools Superintendent Stephen Tracy.

The City of Derby and ex-finance director Henry Domurad, Jr. have reached an out-of-court settlement for an undisclosed amount of money, attorneys said Monday.

Derby Corporation Counsel Joseph Coppola said the settlement will be added to the agenda of the Derby Board of Aldermen, who are scheduled to meet Thursday (May 21).

The settlement will not see Domurad reinstated as finance director, the position he held from 2008 until April. He filed a lawsuit earlier this month, claiming he was wrongfully terminated.
