Unemployment Continues To Rise In The Valley

Derby —The latest unemployment figures are out — and they’re not pretty.
The unemployment rate increased for every town in our coverage area — Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton.
In fact, the local rates in January were higher than at any point in 2009.

Derby Man Died Trying To Rescue Dog

David Kostrey, the deputy director of the city’s Office of Emergency Management, died Wednesday morning attempting to rescue his dog as his Derby Avenue apartment burned, his sister said.

New Meter Rates Surprise Derby Merchants

Derby —Tom Lucia, the manager at Archie Moore’s on Elizabeth Street, had no idea the price of parking outside his restaurant had increased until a customer walked in and told him.
“No one informed us,” Lucia said.
Further up Elizabeth Street, Marie Massari, the office manager at Smile Dental Center, said the same thing.
At Sunflower Dental, also on Elizabeth Street, dentist Anita Dugatto said she too was never notified of the new rates — and she’s a member of the city’s tax board.

Q & A: DERBY PARKING AUTHORITY

John Dorosh, chairman of the city’s Parking Authority, and Leo P. Moscato, Jr., the authority’s director, sat down with the Valley Independent Sentinel to answer questions about the recent increases.
The wide-ranging conversation switched at points, to the status of the aging garage, where, in some spots, large salt deposits, of all things, can be seen sticking through the decking.
