Meet Dave Lenart, New Chief At Derby Storm Rescue

David Lenart is comfortable around blood, fires and reporters.
“I’ve been around them all my life. I grew up around it,” said Lenart, the 33-year-old newly elected chief of the Derby Storm Ambulance and Rescue Corps on Olivia Street.
Lenart became chief Jan. 5.
He is a third generation chief. His father, Thomas Lenart, Sr. was a past chief, as was his grandfather, Edward J. Cotter, Jr.

Boys & Girls Club Offers Science Mentoring Program

The Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley has started the Immersion Mentoring Program, a new science-based mentoring program with 40 mentees and 10 mentors as a part of its partnership with Immersion Learning, a division of the Sea Research Foundation, Inc..
In January, the Club was announced as a sub-grantee of a $1 million grant awarded to Sea Research by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to establish the Immersion Mentoring Program within other Clubs in 11 states, including Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.

Defense Lawyer Angry At Derby Judge

A Waterbury defense lawyer claims a Derby judge has a grudge against him — partly because of the lawyer’s involvement in the so-called “garden hose cop” case.
The attorney, Rob Serafinowicz, filed an eight-page complaint against Judge Burton Kaplan in September claiming Kaplan has “displayed a clear animus and negative bias” toward him that goes back to 2009.
Serafinowicz claims the alleged grudge has biased Kaplan against his other clients.

Derby Redevelopment To Take Place In Phases

A redevelopment project for downtown Derby is expected to begin in the spring or summer, Derby officials said Wednesday.
California-based Eclipse Development has been talking about building about several stores totaling 180,000 square feet of commercial space in an area along the Housatonic River stretching roughly from the Derby-Shelton bridge to the former Lifetouch property on Derby’s Main Street.
Now the plan is to do the project in phases, starting first with a smaller chunk.
