Seymour Skate Park Plans Move Forward

Seymour is closer to getting a new skate park, after the Board of Selectmen approved preliminary plans to relocate the park to town-owned land next to the Community Center on Pine Street.
But the town still has a lot of work to do.
Skate Park Committee chairman Paul Roy is optimistic the park will be nearing completion by the summer.
“If all goes well, we could break ground by mid-March,” Roy told the Board of Selectmen at its meeting on Feb. 7.

Boys & Girls Club Offers Science Mentoring Program

The Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley has started the Immersion Mentoring Program, a new science-based mentoring program with 40 mentees and 10 mentors as a part of its partnership with Immersion Learning, a division of the Sea Research Foundation, Inc..
In January, the Club was announced as a sub-grantee of a $1 million grant awarded to Sea Research by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to establish the Immersion Mentoring Program within other Clubs in 11 states, including Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.

Seymour Economic Development Director Eyes Downtown Parcel

Seymour’s new Economic Development Director Fred A. Messore wants to buy land in downtown Seymour to create more parking and some “green space.”
He’s asking for a large budget increase to make it happen.

Seymour Land Named After Eagle Scouts

A half-acre in the Keith Mitchell Forest will be named after three Eagle Scouts who helped make the spot more user-friendly for nature enthusiasts.
The scouts — Justin Gittings, Adam Messier and Dustin Zrelak — worked on separate Eagle Scout projects at the town-owned parcel at the intersection of Route 188 and Route 34.

Ansonia, Derby Schools Slated To Gain The Most Under Malloy Plan

Gov. Dannel Malloy’s office released a statement Wednesday morning saying the state wants to provide more than $50 million in new money to the “Education Cost Sharing” formula — state aid to local schools.

Report Highlights Some Shortcomings In Seymour Gov’t

Some Seymour town hall employees haven’t had annual reviews in years.
Half the town’s employees are nearing retirement age — and there’s no succession plan set up.
And First Selectman Kurt Miller has 24 different department heads reporting to him on a daily basis.
Those were some of the highlights from a human resources review of Seymour town employees. Consultants from the Seymour company, The Human Resource Consulting Group, presented their report to the Board of Selectmen Tuesday at Seymour Town Hall.

Show Raises $2,200 For Strand Renovation Fund

On Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan. 14, “Bucket List of Unbroken Dreams: Erin K. Moffat the Musical,” a live musical, debuted at the Strand Theater in Seymour, CT.
Both nights were completely sold out and the production raised $2,200 for the theater restoration project, and more than $100 in additional donations that were given directly to the theater.

VA Seeing Spike In Homeless Vets With Families
