Derby Runners Participate In Bridgeport Race

The Derby Middle School Running Club competed in the Bridgeport PAL Christmas Village 5K road race on December 10, 2011.

Steven Stanley led the club with a time of 20:56 (3rd place in the Male 12 and under division), followed by Jack Peccerillo at 22:09, and Sarah Gerckens at 22:34.

‘Title Town’ Honors Champion Cheerleaders

Ansonia is sometimes referred to as “Title Town” because of its record winning state championships in football, according to Board of Aldermen President Eugene Sharkey.

Now add Ansonia cheerleaders to that tradition.

Two squads from the city’s United Youth Football League took home first-place trophies in their divisions at a national cheerleading competition in Florida earlier this month.

Derby Pop Warner Cheerleaders Return Home with National Runner-Up Titles

The Derby Junior Pee Wee and Pee Wee Cheerleaders, coaches and parents returned to chilly and rainy Connecticut from warm and sunny Disney World earlier this month with a little extra carry on luggage — National-Runner Up Titles.

Ansonia Chargers Ready For Ledyard In State Championship

The Ansonia High School varsity football team take their 12-0 record into the Class M state championship Saturday against 11-1 Ledyard.

The game is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

Lionetti Questions Hiring Of Derby Basketball Coach

A Derby resident is questioning the process the school district used to hire a varsity boys basketball coach.

The Derby Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Francisco Salazar as the high school basketball coach in July. Salazar is a Spanish teacher at Derby High School and has previous experience coaching athletic teams within the district.

However, Thomas Lionetti, a lifelong resident of the city, complained that school officials did not advertise for the position externally — and they didn’t use a search committee to screen applicants.

The Ansonia High School football program will be featured Sunday (Nov. 27) at noon on “Traditions,” a documentary television series.

The show airs on SportsNet New York, a regional cable station better known as SNY.
