The town of Oxford has received an $8,000 grant to plant new trees at the high school.
The grant — called the America The Beautiful Urban Forestry Grant — is given out by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, with money coming from United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry.
DEEP awarded grants to 17 projects totaling $81,425, according to a press release issued Tuesday Jan. 24.
Oxford was the only Valley town to receive a grant this year, although other towns received money last year.
Oxford also received a grant last year, for $7,600 to plant 20 trees within the town-owned Agnes Shiavi Tetlak Park.
The $8,000 will be used to “plant legacy trees on the grounds of Oxford High School that will combine course work in the school with the actual tree plantings,” according to the press release.
“Improving and managing urban forests in Connecticut touches everyone’s lives, whether you live or work in a city, suburbs or a rural area,” said Commissioner Daniel C. Esty in a press release.
Esty said the trees are “vital to the quality of life in Connecticut.”
