Ansonia Police To Review Tax Collector Documents

A spokesman for the Ansonia Police Department released the following written statement on behalf of Chief Kevin Hale Thursday:

On Aug. 8, 2012, the Office of Mayor James Della Volpe received a report from a fact finding committee into irregularities at the Ansonia Tax Collector’s Office.

Mayor James Della Volpe has recommended that the report be forwarded to the Ansonia Police Department for a determination of criminal activity.

The Ansonia Police Department is awaiting the fact finding report in reference to the Ansonia Tax Collector’s Offices’ handling of the delinquent motor vehicle taxes and the issuance of tax waivers.

Upon receipt of this preliminary report, the Ansonia Police Department, in conjunction with the Milford-Derby State’s Attorney’s Office, will review the information to determine if any criminal activity took place.

If it is determined that a criminal investigation is warranted, the agencies involved will make a joint decision as to which law enforcement agency will investigate the complaint.

While the Ansonia Police Department is capable of handling this type of investigation, it may be prudent to request an outside agency to assume investigative responsibilities since this type of incident involves public funds and City of Ansonia’s employee’s actions.

No further information will be released by this agency until the review of the documentation has been completed.
