Charges Dropped Against Shelton Officer

Low-level charges against a Shelton police officer were dropped by prosecutors Thursday.

The officer, Daniel Judkins, was charged with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors, after tussling with his brother-in-law inside his home during his birthday party last month.

Judkins’ brother-in-law was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief.

At Superior Court in Derby Thursday, prosecutor Kimberley Northrop said that the Judicial Branch’s Family Services division, which supervises domestic violence cases, had recommended the case be dropped.

It was an isolated incident with his brother-in-law,” Northrop said. Further prosecution is not warranted.”

Northrop nolled the case, meaning the charges will be formally dismissed as long as Judkins stays out of trouble for 13 months.

Court records indicate the charges against Judkins’ brother-in-law, Lorenzo Durante, were dropped as well.

Outside court, Judkins’ lawyer, Edward Gavin, said he was happy with the disposition.

It was a good resolution of the case,” Gavin said. He was fully compliant with all the conditions of court. He’s a good young man, he’s in the reserves, and I think the world of him. He did the responsible thing here.”

He’s an outstanding young man and an outstanding police officer,” Gavin added. I’m glad this road bump is resolved for him.”

Police Chief Joel Hurliman put Judkins on administrative leave after the arrest, but he has returned to active duty, Hurliman said Friday.

The chief said a separate internal investigation in the case is not yet complete.

When it is, Hurliman said he will make a finding and take further action if warranted.
