Cigarette Sparked Shelton Condo Fire

FACEBOOK PHOTOThe Red Cross is assisting a Shelton woman with housing after a fire ripped through her condo Monday.

There were no injuries.

The blaze was reported at 4:36 a.m. Monday at 6 Acorn Hollow, part of the Tamarac Condominium complex off Lake Road, according to Fire Marshal James Tortora.

The fire marshal ruled the cause of the fire accidental, and said it was started by a cigarette butt that was left unattended.

About 40 firefighters from the Echo Hose, Huntington, White Hills, and Pine Rock Park volunteer fire companies responded.

Upon arrival firefighters found a fire on the second floor on a three story unit,” Tortora said in a prepared statement. The fire was extinguished and under control within 30 minutes but not before causing extensive fire damage to several rooms in the unit.”

Tortora said the Red Cross responded and is assisting the woman who lived at the condo, which is now uninhabitable.

In a prepared statement, the Red Cross said caseworkers would meet with the woman to work on a long-term recovery plan.

The fire marshal said the fire started accidentally in a second-floor den of the condo before spreading to several other rooms.
