Grief Counselors Available In Ansonia Schools

Ansonia schools and city officials expressed their condolences Friday for two children who died in separate vehicle-related accidents this week.

Six-year-old Nyah Marcano, a passenger in a vehicle that crashed in Route 8 in Shelton Tuesday, died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident. Two days later, 6‑year-old Leah Rondon died after police said a wagon she was playing in rolled onto Ford Street and was hit by a truck.

Both were about to enter first grade when schools open next week.

Nyah was a student at Prendergast School. Leah went to Mead.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families, friends and loved ones of these two children,” Carol Merlone, superintendent of schools, said in a statement Friday.

The Ansonia Police Department and the Ansonia Fire Department are working with the school district and Mayor Cassetti to offer support to the families,” school officials said. A ziti dinner fundraiser is planned for next week at Ansonia High School.”

Grief counselors will also be available today and next week at the two schools. Parents are asked to call the school for services: Mead School, 203 – 736-5090, and Prendergast School, 203 – 736-5080.

The school district on Monday announced two fundraisers to benefit the girls’ families.

A gofundme page to help pay for Nyah Marcano’s funeral expenses has also been set up.

The Valley Indy reached out to the creator of the gofundme page Thursday.
