A Shelton High School elevator got stuck between two floors Wednesday afternoon after too many students piled into it.
There were 13 students in the elevator, according to Shelton High School Headmaster Beth Smith.
The weight from the overloaded elevator caused the emergency brakes to enact, stopping the elevator between the second and third floors, Smith said.
Smith called the police department, the fire department and the ambulance corps as a precaution.
Emergency personnel opened the doors, and students were able to slide out of the elevator onto the second floor.
No students were injured in the evacuation. Emergency crews were at the scene for about an hour.
The elevator is used by students with medical needs, including students on crutches, Smith said.
Seven of the students who got onto the elevator Wednesday afternoon did not belong there.
“The elevator is run by a swipe card system,” Smith said. “When the door opens, it’s just like any other door. Anyone can go in.”
Smith said the school will take disciplinary action against the students who did not belong in the elevator.
“It caused a major disruption to the school environment, and to the community at large,” she said.
