The police commission unanimously appointed Matthew Young and Paulo Soares as new police officers during a special meeting Monday (June 27).

Mayor David Cassetti then swore the pair in.

Police Chief Kevin Hale said the two officers will begin field training in Ansonia Wednesday with a view to having them patrolling on their own by the end of July.

Both Soares and Young come to Ansonia via the Waterbury Police Department, where they both worked as police officers for about a year.

That means they won’t have to go through 40 weeks of training at the state police academy in Meriden, which Hale said helps a lot.

It was a challenge to pull this off,” the chief told the police commission Monday. They made it easier by virtue of their background and their preparation.”

Young grew up in Shelton, graduating from Shelton High School and Western Connecticut State University.

Soares is from Naugatuck, and graduated from Naugatuck High School and Naugatuck Valley Community College.

Each will earn a salary of roughly $61,000.

The chief said the department will be seeking applicants again soon as more officers file retirement papers and a new lieutenant is promoted from within the department’s ranks.
