Ansonia Man Accused Of Robbing Bank In Seymour

A 21-year-old man from Ansonia was charged with robbing a bank in Seymour Saturday.

Steven Gomez-Maya was charged with first-degree robbery. He is being held at the Bridgeport Correctional Center on a $250,000 bond.

Seymour police Deputy Chief Paul Satkowski said investigators caught Gomez-Maya just three hours after he robbed the TD Bank at 249 Bank St. Saturday (Aug. 19).

According to a prepared statement from police, authorities received a 911 call about 10 a.m. reporting a bank robbery. The bank’s alarm had been tripped, too.

Police said they were told a man in his 20s handed a note to a teller indicating a robbery and demanding money.”

The male suspect indicated he had a weapon but one was never displayed,” Satkowski said in the statement, which was released Tuesday.

Gomez-Maya left with an undisclosed amount of money.

(Police often do not release dollar amounts in an effort to discourage future bank robberies).

The male suspect was observed by witnesses getting into a parked vehicle and driving away from the scene,” according to the police.

Seymour police, including Inspector Joseph DeNigris and Commander John D’Antona, responded and tracked Gomez-Maya to his residence in Ansonia.

Seymour police also posted the suspect’s photo on Facebook about 11 a.m. Saturday. The post was shared more than 350 times.

DeNigris and D’Antona allegedly saw Gomez-Maya drive away from his residence in a car matching the description of the car used in the bank robbery.

They pulled him over and he was taken into custody without incident.

Police later served two search warrants in an effort to gather more evidence in the case.

Gomez-Maya is due back in court Sept. 11.

Correction: An earlier version of this post misstated Joseph DeNigris’ rank.
