An Ansonia man is due in court this month after police said an investigation revealed he was allegedly downloading child pornography through a file-sharing program.
Steven Jalowiec Jr., 29, was charged with first-degree possession of child pornography Aug. 7 and released after posting a $5,000 bond.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges Sept. 21, according to court records.
His next court date is Feb. 14 at Superior Court in Milford.
The Valley Indy emailed Jalowiec’s lawyer last month.
According to an arrest warrant, Ansonia police began an investigation last April, after detectives with the Milford Police Department’s Computer Crimes Division advised them that “a large amount of child pornography was being downloaded in Ansonia.”
A Milford detective searching peer-to-peer file-sharing software found an IP address sharing 211 pictures and three videos depicting child pornography, the warrant says.
Police got a court order to obtain the subscriber information from the Internet service provider linked to the IP address.
The company told police the IP address was assigned to the house where Jalowiec was living.
Police then obtained a warrant to search the house.
While doing so, the warrant says Jalowiec admitted downloading the files and sharing them on the Internet.
The warrant says Jalowiec told police he had done a “clean sweep” to delete the files from his computer five days before his home was searched.
The warrant doesn’t say whether Jalowiec gave police a reason for why he deleted all of the files.
It says police found “several forensic artifacts” on the computer that it had been used to download and share the files.
“This laptop had evidence that child pornography was downloaded and made available to share on the Internet,” the warrant says.
First-degree possession of child pornography is a Class B felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
