An Ansonia man will be sentenced to 12 years behind bars for shooting a man outside a North Main Street store and leading police on a chase last summer.

Sheldon Haley, 38, pleaded guilty Jan. 16 to first-degree assault and carrying a pistol without a permit before Judge Frank Iannotti at Superior Court in Milford.

According to court documents, Haley got into an argument with a 27-year-old man inside the Ansonia Mini Mart at the intersection of North Main and Fourth streets about 4 p.m. July 4.

The argument continued outside the store, and ended with Haley shooting the 27-year-old man in the upper back and then driving away in a Honda Accord.

In the ambulance, the victim told police that a man he knew as Slim,” which detectives knew was a nickname of Haley’s, had shot him.

A few minutes after the shooting a witness who had seen Haley driving form the scene of the shooting called police saying they were following behind his car.

A Derby police officer tried to stop the car going east on Route 34 in Derby, but Haley ran a red light and tried to speed away.

Haley then led police on a high speed chase during which he tossed the 9 mm handgun he used in the shooting out of the car.

The gun was later recovered by Orange police.

The chase ended when Haley crashed his car in West Haven and was taken into custody. He’s been behind bars since.

It’s unclear what specifically caused the argument between Haley and the victim, Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch said Monday (Jan. 22).

Haley never gave a statement and the victim became uncooperative when questioned about the incident,” Lynch said.

The bullet went through the man’s shoulder and neck and into his chin.

The victim was operated on and the bullet was recovered, the injuries were serious but I do not believe life threatening,” Lynch said.

According to court records, a plea deal in the case calls for Haley to receive a 20-year prison sentence to be suspended after 12 years, to be followed by five years of probation.

Haley’s sentencing is scheduled for March 29.
