Update: Child Dies In Route 8 Crash In Shelton

Update: State police said a 6‑year-old girl from Ansonia was killed during a multi-vehicle accident on Route 8 in Shelton Wednesday.

The girl was identified as Nyah Marcano.

She was one of several passengers in a 2002 Chevy Tahoe traveling north on Route 8 being driven by Joan Nancy Willoughby, 36, of Ansonia.

Willoughby allegedly rear-ended a Ford F‑150 that had slowed down for traffic, according to an accident summary from state police.

Willoughby’s vehicle then overturned as it left the road and went down an embankment, according to state police.

An unspecified number of people from the Tahoe were taken to Bridgeport Hospital for non life-theatening” injuries, police said.

Michael C. Grieder, the 44-year-old driver of the Ford that was rear-ended, was taken to Griffin Hospital in Derby.

The accident remains under investigation, including whether a restraint system in the Tahoe was in use, police said.

The crash happened at 3:12 p.m. near exit 12.

A second, minor crash was reported a short time later.

In all, eight people were taken to area hospitals from the wrecks.

A child was killed in a crash on Route 8 in Shelton Tuesday afternoon.

Police did not release names. Details are still under investigation.

A three-car crash was reported about 3:15 p.m. according to preliminary information released about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday by Trooper Kelly Grant, a public information officer with the state police.

Later Tuesday Grant confirmed to the Connecticut Post that the crash killed a 6‑year-old child.

Initial emergency broadcasts said the child was ejected from a vehicle during the crash. Multiple ambulances reported to the scene. The six-year-old child was one of several people in the vehicle under the age of 18, according to radio broadcasts.

The crash was reported on Route 8 north, near exit 12.

An accident reconstruction team was on site as of 6:30 p.m. Major delays were reported on Route 8 north approaching the accident, with one lane of the highway open.

A total of eight people from both crashes were taken to the hospital.
