Coppola To Be Honored By St. Mary-St. Michael School

St. Mary – St. Michael School has announced honorees for their 2018 Recognition Awards. Among those being honored is retired principal, Linda Coppola, who has been widely regarded as a key figure in the survival and revitalization of the small Catholic School once targeted for closing.

Coppola, who will be receiving the Spirit of St. Mary – St. Michael School Award for alumni, dedicated her entire teaching career to the children of Derby. She taught at Bradley School from 1973 through 1983, and at Irving School from 1983 through 2004 before being appointed principal of Bradley School in 2004. In 2010, she was appointed as principal of St. Mary – St. Michael School until her retirement in 2017.

Art Gerckens, Director of Development for the school said, Mrs. Coppola’s commitment to the children of Derby and to her faith are an inspiration to all who wonder if they could make a difference in the world. In her case, she did.”

Others being honored include Jack Jurkowski, who is also receiving the Spirit of St. Mary – St. Michael School Award given to alumni who have made a significant impact in their profession. 

Brian & Patty Tarini, and Christine Clark will be honored with Guardian Angel Awards given to those who’ve made a contribution to their respective communities. Bernie Williamson and the Derby Elks Lodge #571 will be the recipients of the Christian Compassion Award for their spirit of generosity and goodwill.

The awards will be presented at a dinner March 24th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Villa Bianca in Seymour. Tickets cost $45.
