Derby Apartment Fire Under Investigation

The fire marshal’s office is investigating an apartment fire that displaced a family of three Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re still investigating the fire. We haven’t made a determination at this point in time,” Derby Fire Marshal Phil Hawks said.

The fire was reported through a 911 call from 82 Factory St. at about 1:40 p.m.

There were no injuries reported.

The fire was in a second-floor apartment in the two-story building. The first floor of the building previously housed Derby Awning.

“When we arrived on scene we had smoke showing. When members advanced a line in, they found a rear room fully involved,” Derby Fire Department Second Assistant Chief William Nicoletti said.

A man and wife with a young child living in the apartment were home at the time of the fire but were able to get out. The are being helped by the Valley Red Cross. The family stayed with relatives Wednesday night, Nicoletti said.

The second floor of the building had three apartments, Nicoletti said. Firefighters were concerned with making sure the flames didn’t spread into a common attic area above the apartments.

“We had Shelton Fire Department assist us with securing the roof to make sure we didn’t have any extension into the common attic space,” Nicoletti said. “Our concern was the attic space, which linked all three apartments — if we had (fire) extend into there, it would have spread rapidly to the other apartments.”

It took about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire. There were about 25 firefighters on the scene.
