On Wednesday, March 28, 12:30 p.m., please join us at the Derby Public Library for the monthly Lunchtime book discussion. March’s featured book will be “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” by J.D. Vance.
This memoir is a powerful account of growing up in the rust belt of Ohio and in an Appalachian town in Kentucky. The author escapes generations of poverty becoming a marine and Yale Law School graduate.
This is a probing look at the struggles of America’s working class. The Vance family story begins in postwar America. J. D.’s grandparents were “dirt poor and in love,” and moved north from Kentucky’s Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the poverty around them.
Ron Howard is directing and producing a movie adaptation of the book, which was a New York Times best-seller.
Lunchtime Book Discussions are held the last Wednesday of the month and are free and open to the public. Multiple copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk.
