Derby Budget Public Hearing Tuesday, May 24

Taxes in Derby could increase about $300 for the average single-family tax bill under a budget approved by the city’s tax board last month.

If you pay taxes in Derby, now’s your only chance to be heard.

A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday (May 24) in the Aldermanic Chambers of Derby City Hall, 1 Elizabeth St.

Earlier this month the tax board approved an approximate $40.9 million budget that has the potential to increase taxes by 4 mills.

Under the budget, Derby Public Schools would receive a 3.5 percent increase, or $606,000. That is the full amount requested by the Derby Board of Education.

Members of the tax board said the Derby tax increase is being driven by three factors:

  • A decrease in state aid
  • A falling grand list
  • An increase in costs connected to employee benefits

Below is an interview with tax board chair Judy Szewczyk, who explains what’s happening in Derby.

It’s a revaluation year in Derby, meaning residents have to make sure they’re looking at the most current assessment of their property in order to get accurate info regarding their tax bills next year.

The tax board has been using draft documents to try to gauge what a 4 mill tax increase will do to people.

The information below shows a range of what the budget will do to tax bills if it is approved as is.
