Derby Native Wins Collegiate Softball Award

University of New Haven senior shortstop and Derby High School alumna Christina Gelardi was named the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Softball Player of the Year as announced by the conference office Thursday (May 2).

Gelardi had a remarkable offensive season in helping lead the Chargers to a 34 – 12 regular-season record and the No. 2 seed in the Southwest Division. 

Gelardi currently leads the nation with a .636 on base percentage, and is also tops in the NE-10 in runs scored (55) and walks (34).

Gelardi is also among the league leaders in a number of other offensive categories. She is second in the NE-10 in both hitting (.484) and stolen bases (22).

She is also currently fourth in slugging percentage (.713) and is among the top-20 in RBI (31) and home runs (6).

During the season, Gelardi was also selected as the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association National Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, April 7, and she was also named a First Team All-Conference selection.

The conference also announced its other major award winners, as well as the All-Conference and All-Rookie teams on Thursday. 

Among those listed was Southern Connecticut State University’s Alyssa Downs, of Seymour.

New Haven begins its postseason run Thursday night in the NE-10 Championship tournament Second Round against Stonehill.

The Chargers and Skyhawks opening pitch in Manchester, N.H. is set for 7 p.m. on the campus of host Southern New Hampshire. The winning team will advance to the semifinals on Friday night against the host Penmen also at 7 p.m.
