Derby Race Will Help Local Domestic Violence Services

Walnut Hill Community Church is sponsoring the Second Annual 5k Easter Run- Walk, an event benefiting BHCare’s Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services.

The Easter Run-Walk will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2014 on the Derby Greenway starting at O’Sullivan’s Island (Caroline Street in Derby).

Net proceeds will benefit the Umbrella’s domestic violence programs and services, which supports the Valley towns of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton, as well as town from the New Haven shoreline area.

Last year, the Umbrella provided free emergency safe shelter, 24-hour crisis, counseling, advocacy, support and other crucial services to more than 9,000 women and their
children.

All services offered are free of charge and confidential. Services support 170 different languages 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We are committed to loving God and our neighbors” said Walt Mayhew, Pastor of Walnut Hill’s Derby Campus. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate God’s love to
people desperately in need.”

Last year’s event raised more than $3,000.

It was truly a celebration of community. We’re not your typical church. We are committed to making the Valley a better place to live, work and play,” Mayhew said.

Check in on race day begins at 8 a.m.

The Fun Run” begins for younger children begins at 8:40 a.m., while the 5k Run-Walk starts at 9:00 a.m.

Awards with be presented to the top finishers overall and by age group. A free post-race bib number raffle will be conducted and post-race refreshments will be served.

This event is co-sponsored by Noah’s Ark Early Learning Center, which operates out of the Walnut Hill facility located at 29 9th St. in Derby.
