Derby Schools Soak Up The Ice Bucket Challenge

Derby school employees laid down an ice bucket challenge Monday to their counterparts in Ansonia, Seymour and Shelton.

Faculty and staff from all four Derby schools — the high school, the middle school, along with the Irving and Bradley elementary schools — gathered in the lower parking lot on Nutmeg Avenue where Superintendent Matthew Conway led the charge.

Conway dumped a bucket of ice on his head to raise money and awareness for ALS, a nerve disease that affects the brain and spinal cord.

Derby firefighter Brian Mezzapelle then hosed the rest of the staff down with a firehose from a ladder truck.

Several members of the Derby Board of Education got wet, as did Mayor Anita Dugatto and some folks from City Hall.

The school district brought in Mike Majlak, an event photographer, to capture the water dump on video from a small remote-controlled helicopter drone. Majlak did not charge the school district for his drone services, according to the superintendent.

Watch the video to see how it went down and watch the video below for reaction from Conway.

It’s like a day at the beach,” said a soaked Mayor Dugatto afterward.

Prior to the water dump, Derby teachers and staff watched a video explaining the history of Peter Frates, a 29-year-old former Boston College baseball player who has ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease).
