Division Street Could Open Friday, But Don’t Forget About That Other Stuff

The traffic headaches caused by the reconstruction of the railroad vehicle crossing on Division Street are expected end by 8 p.m. Friday, when the crossing will reopen, according to an email from the state Department of Transportation.

To quote Ric Flair, WOO!

(FYI up front for people’s brains. I’ll share what information I have about Waterbury branch disruption, the Stevenson Dam/Route 34 closure and the Route 34/Derby Main Street bridge closure in the grafs below. Please just stick with me for a little bit. I was going to write please just bare with me,” but Google told me that’s an invite to undress).

The railroad crossing closure on Division Street had two general purposes — replace a really cruddy and old tire-slashing railroad crossing — and install electrical conduits that will pave the way to improvements on the Waterbury branch of Metro North Railroad.

No one has been able to get on a train locally for a week.

But rail service on the Waterbury branch is expected to return Monday. There are track repairs happening elsewhere on the Waterbury branch, so it doesn’t jive with the Division Street opening.

In any event, Valley Indy drivers were happy to hear their week of extra-clogged roads will be coming to an end.

Just check out their Facebook comments below:

The worst traffic was on April 28, when a minor crash on the Bridge Street bridge in Ansonia caused backups all the way into Shelton on Route 8. That’s because Bridge Street was the alternative route for the closed Division Street.

MORE HEADACHES

While our driving life on the Ansonia-Derby border is returning to normal, let’s keep in mind Route 34 over the Stevenson Dam is scheduled to close at 6 a.m. Saturday, May 2. Guys and gals who make more money than I do will be making repairs to the dam.

The work on the dam should be done by at 12 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, according to stuff I stole from a press release.

EVEN MORE HEADACHES!

We’ve all seen the signs about the Route 34/Main Street bridge in Derby, near St. Michael’s Church.

The Valley Indy hasn’t been able to confirm the potential closures with the state DOT, but we are in receipt of this email:

Baier Construction Co. is tentatively scheduled to install the new Girders beginning the week of May 11th at nighttime. A detour would be implemented and the bridge closed between 10 p.m and 6 a.m. A press release will be issued prior to the noted work.”

That press release hasn’t made my desk yet.

Perhaps someone asked why girders received a capital g.
