Division Street Traffic Light Fixed

Update: It was working Wednesday morning!

Update: As of 2:49 Tuesday, Sept. 14, the light was not working.

Original story follows:

A traffic light on the Ansonia-Derby border that hadn’t been working for a week is fixed — but not after two car crashes in one day.

The light on Division Street at the intersection of Atwater Avenue and Clifton Street stopped working Labor Day weekend. It’s a busy intersection and was identified in 1997 as one of two spots on Division Street with a high accident rate.

Ansonia and Derby share responsibility for the traffic light.

The Valley Independent Sentinel asked about the light Thursday, Sept. 9.

Lt. Wayne Williams, spokesman for the Ansonia Police Department, said workers installed a loaner part Friday as a temporary fix while sending a part of the light out for repairs.

It was working Friday afternoon, Williams said in an e‑mail.

The light stopped working sometime between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

There were two crashes at the intersection Saturday, caused by drivers who didn’t stop at the flashing red. Further details on the crashes were not available Monday.

A crew arrived at the scene Monday and fixed a different part inside the light’s control box at Clifton Avenue, Williams said.

It looks like Ansonia is going to send Derby a bill for a portion of the repairs.

While there is an issue because it is controlled by two towns, we are using our company and will work the payment out with Derby at a later date so that we can get it fixed quickly,” Williams said in an e‑mail.
