Drug Charges Lodged Against Overdose Victim’s Cousin

The cousin of a Shelton man who died of a heroin overdose last year was charged Thursday (March 2) with helping the victim buy the drug.

In a prepared statement Shelton Police Detective Richard Bango said the cousin, 33-year-old Justin Kevalis of Ansonia, also attempted to cover up the sale during the investigation.”

The overdose occurred Dec. 9, 2016, Bango said, and killed a 34-year-old Shelton resident.

A subsequent investigation by Shelton Detectives revealed the man purchased the heroin earlier that day in Bridgeport,” Bango said. Present in the house at the time was a relative of the victim, 33-year-old Justin Kevalis of Ansonia. It was later revealed that Kevalis purchased the heroin with the victim that day and attempted to cover up the sale during the investigation.”

Police charged Kevalis with conspiracy to commit illegal sale of narcotics and interfering with police. He was also charged with possession of heroin after police found heroin on him during his arrest.

Bango said Kevalis posted bonds totaling $11,000 and is scheduled to appear at Superior Court in Derby March 16.
