Voting in the lower Naugatuck Valley has been brisk, according to town officials.
John “Jack” Finn, Shelton’s Democratic registrar of voters, said that about 5,600 people had cast ballots citywide by about noon, nearly a quarter of the city’s 22,896 registered voters.
Shelton has a total of 5,002 Democrats, 5,936 Republicans, 11,916 unaffiliated voters, and 42 voters registered to minor parties.
As of noon in Seymour, about 2,200 people had voted, according to Elise Wood Republican Registrar of Voters.
At 1 p.m., the Registrar’s office in Seymour had a line of people waiting to use the state’s same day registration policy.
There are 9,431 registered voters in Seymour, Wood said, meaning about 23 percent had cast ballots by midday.
“It’s been crazy,” said the Registrar, before moving on to help same-day registrants.
The sentiment was mirrored in Derby by Louise Pitney, the Democratic Registrar of Voters.
In Derby, as of 1:30 p.m., 1,632 had voted, or 30 percent of the city’s 5,398 registered voters.
Ansonia’s Registrars weren’t as impressed. As of 1 p.m., 2,375 of 9,386 registered voters had cast ballots, or about 25 percent.
That’s normal for a non-presidential, midterm election, according to Republican Registrar Nancy Valentine, who predicted a citywide turnout of 50.3 percent.
