Update: Fire Guts Two-Story Garage In Seymour

There were no injuries during a fire inside a detached garage at 24 Roosevelt Drive in Seymour Thursday morning.

The town’s fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause and origin.

The fire department was sent to the address about 9:30 a.m. Although the address is Roosevelt Drive, the property actually fronts Argonne Terrace.

The fire department arrived on scene and saw a two-story detached garage with heavy fire on the second floor,” Seymour Deputy Fire Marshal Tim Willis, the department’s spokesman, said.

The owner was in the building’s second-floor workshop when the fire started, Willis said.

He saw the fire and called 911 immediately,” Willis said.

The building was too dangerous for firefighters to enter, so they opted for an exterior attack with hoses and a ladder truck.

It was an older, fatigued building, so they decided not to go inside. We didn’t want to get anyone hurt,” Willis said.

Good thing, too, because the second floor collapsed as firefighters dumped water on the blaze. The building buckled and made a loud popping noise as the floor collapsed.

Water and contents from the garage then cascaded down Argonne Terrace toward Roosevelt Drive.

State environmental officials were notified because the property is close to the Housatonic River.

The fire itself was knocked down quickly but the structure was a total loss.

The investigation is wide open and we have not made any determinations,” Willis said.

There was a small amount of ammunition in the garage, which the homeowner warned the emergency responders about. A few rounds went off, Willis told the Valley Indy at 12:30 p.m., but no one was hurt.

I believe it was less than 10 rounds (in total),” Willis said.

We will look for it during the investigation,” Willis said.

An estimated 40 firefighters responded to the call, including firefighters from Oxford.
