Fireworks Over The Housatonic Thursday

The booms will start about 9 p.m. or so.

Best viewing places in Derby include Elizabeth Street and the top of the parking garage on Thompson Place, according to Valley Indy readers on Facebook.

Many people (unofficially) use the large Home Depot parking lot in Derby as a viewing spot — but keep in mind we’ve received numerous complaints that driving out when the show is over takes forever. 

Best viewing spot in Shelton is Veterans Memorial Park off Canal Street, according to those same readers. That’s the spot formerly called the slab.”

Yeah yeah yeah, we’ve heard a boat on the river provides a good glimpse, too.

FAQ

Please note the entrance to the Derby Greenway from Bridge Street will close at 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

The boat launch next to the Derby Greenway under the Route 8 bridge will close about 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Derby police will be closing Elizabeth Street from Main (Route 34) to Third Street (United Cigar) at about 5:30 or 6 p.m.

Shelton police said Canal Street and the Riverwalk will be closed to the public from noon Thursday until the fireworks are over.

Howe Avenue will be closed from Wharf Street to Center Street from 8 p.m.

Do not park on the Route 8 bridge to watch the show. It’s dangerous. It’s a state highway, so anyone who gathers there to watch the show will be asked to move.

Do not watch the show from the train trestle over the Housatonic. It’s dangerous. Read any posted signs, and stay off!

Boogie

The Starving Artists” will be performing in Derby on Elizabeth Street from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

There will be vendors in downtown Derby, too.

The Navels” will be performing off Canal Street at 7 p.m.

There will be vendors and food trucks in downtown Shelton along Canal Street, too.

What If It’s Raining Cats And Dogs?

The rain date is July 5.

Where Do I Park?

In Derby, there is onstreet parking downtown, along with a parking garage on Thompson Place. Click here for info on the parking garage.

City officials tell us you’ll have to feed the street meters until 5 p.m. Parking in the garage will be free in the evening.

In Shelton, there is onstreet parking, along with parking in the big lot between Howe Avenue and Canal Street, near the slab.” Police said handicapped parking will be available in the lot at the corner of Howe Avenue and Cornell Street on a first come, first serve basis.

People attending the fireworks should be prepared for detours and delays due to the high volume of people and vehicles expected to attend the fireworks,” Shelton cops said in a statement.
