Gerckens: Hey, What Happened To Our Bet?

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I thought I would write an open letter to the political leaders of our good friends from the great city of Ansonia.

Your pals here in Derby have been a little busy working with a project that involved some guy named Terry Bradshaw (perhaps you’ve heard of him).

But, since that item is behind us, I wanted to bring attention to an apparent oversight.

I recently read a quote from a press release dated July 17, 2014.

The quote attributed to Ansonia Board of Aldermen President, Phil Tripp, reads, Our seniors are already anticipating a delicious lunch to be served by the Derby aldermen.”

The source of Mr. Tripp’s bravado was a friendly wager made between the Ansonia and Derby Boards of Aldermen.

An old-fashioned baseball game between the Ansonia Coppermen and the Derby Osborndales was played as part of Ansonia’s Summerfest.”

The terms were as follows:

Should the Coppermen lose, the Ansonia Board of Aldermen would be required to serve lunch at the Derby Senior Center.

If the Osborndales lost, the Derby Board of Aldermen would be required to serve lunch at the Ansonia Senior Center.

The final score of the game was the Osborndales 9, the Coppermen 8.

In other words, Derby won.

Making a wager is easy. Anyone who engages in that sort of business will tell you that the paying and collecting of the debt is the tricky part.

Here’s to the health of our respective cities and to the bellies of our seniors being filled from your capable hands.

(EDITORS NOTE: Alderman Tripp left a comment below saying he was at the senior center twice)

Of course, if the Coppermen’s hands were a little more capable, perhaps there would have been one or two less fielding errors and the shoe would be on the other foot.

Happy Thanksgiving.
