Math, Nutrition, Community Service At Derby’s Irving School

photo:krystina morganThe fourth-graders were in three separate lines in the Irving School gymnasium Thursday, trying to be as quiet as they could for their teachers.

It wasn’t easy.

A Peapod grocery truck had just arrived in the parking lot, and the kids were about to get the chance to unload its bounty.

Equally exciting for the kids — the groceries were going to a worthy cause.

The hands-on learning event was part of Peapod’s Kids Give Back”program. It’s a five-year-old program designed to teach kids about nutrition, managing a budget and giving back to the community.

Peapod is a company customers use to order groceries online, and then have the trucks deliver to their homes. Locally, Peapod teams with Stop & Shop.

Using a $250 donation from Peapod, Irving School students placed a delivery order online — with an emphasis on good nutrition.

The groceries were then donated to the Connecticut Food Bank, per the wishes of the Irving students.

Irving School fourth grade teacher Frank Briganti said students used math and technology skills as part of the program.

This came with a whole math lesson, nutrition labels, and how to read decimals and fractions. There was a lot of math involved,” Briganti said.

Each student carried a bag filled with food from the Peapod truck to a car from the Connecticut Food Bank.

This was a good opportunity for the kids to experience how to buy healthy food and to budget their spending,” Briganti said.

When asked if it feels good to give to the community, the entire fourth grade shouted yes” in unison and clapped their hands to applaud themselves on a good job done.
