A small fire burned the wall of a Shelton hotel before being knocked down by firefighters Tuesday.

There were no injuries.

The fire was reported about 9 p.m. by a person staying in a first-floor room at the Extended Stay America hotel at 945 Bridgeport Ave.

We had a three- to four-foot fire on the exterior wall,” Assistant Chief Nick Verdicchio said. The occupant of the room tried to extinguish it himself (but) couldn’t do it.”

The three-story hotel was evacuated without incident as firefighters put out the flames, Verdicchio said.

We had the fire knocked down within 10 minutes,” Verdicchio said, but the blaze caused part of the building to fill with smoke.

Guests staying at the hotel were allowed to return to their rooms about 9:45 p.m. after smoke was cleared from the building.

Firefighters from all four volunteer Shelton fire companies responded, and crews from Trumbull and Derby covered stations in the city in case additional calls came in.

EMS and police responded as well.

Damage from the fire was confined to the room where it began, Verdicchio said.

He said the fire marshal would investigate how the fire started.
