Passerby Alerts Homeowner To Shelton House Fire

A fire caused by a discarded cigarette rendered a Shelton home uninhabitable Monday morning, the city’s fire marshal said.

There were no injuries.

Firefighters were sent to 15 Fox Run Lane about 8 a.m. after a passerby saw the back of the house on fire and woke up the homeowner, Fire Marshal James Tortora said.

They arrived to find the back of the house engulfed in flames. The fire had also spread into the home’s dining room, kitchen, and attic.

Firefighters from the Echo Hose, White Hills, and Huntington volunteer fire companies had the fire under control in about a half-hour, Tortora said.

A fire company from Monroe also responded because Shelton had another call at the same time, the fire marshal said.

Tortora said the people living at the home are now staying with relatives.

He said the fire was caused by one of the residents smoking a cigarette and discarding it a dried-out flowerpot before leaving for work in the morning.
