Police Identify Pedestrian Killed In Derby

Derby police identified the man struck and killed by a vehicle on Route 34 in east Derby last week as 57-year-old Alfredo Simoes.

Simoes was believed to be homeless, according to a prepared statement from Derby police Tuesday.

The accident happened 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

His last known address was in New Haven.

Police have not been able to locate Simoes’ family to tell them about his death. UPDATE: Derby police said Wednesday the man’s family has been notified.

Derby police released a photo of him Tuesday in an effort to locate his family.

The Derby Police Department is asking that anyone who knew Simoes or had any interactions with him during last week to please contact the Derby Police Department at 203 735 7811,” according to a statement from Lt Justin Stanko.

According to Stanko, witnesses told police they saw Simoes walking on Route 34 east before he was hit.

Simoes was in the middle of the road just east of the Chapel Street intersection when he was struck, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Simoes was not at fault, police said.

The investigation remains open pending a complete motor vehicle inspection and results of a toxicology test connected to Simoes.
