Ansonia police arrested two teens last week and are trying to figure out whether they are connected to a spate of burglaries and attempted burglaries in the Hilltop section of the city.
Police arrested a 17-year-old Ansonia and an 18-year-old Monroe resident after they were allegedly spotted leaving a property on Benz Street in the early morning hours of Aug. 26.
Lt. Andrew Cota said the pair was acting suspiciously. One of the two ran when police approached, but he was quickly apprehended.
Cota noted there wasn’t a burglary at the property, but the two were in the yard.
The 18-year-old Monroe resident was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon because he was allegedly carrying a small knife.
The younger teen was also allegedly carrying a knife, so he was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon as well. He was also charged with interfering with police and criminal mischief after allegedly damaging the inside of a police car by kicking the divider so hard he bent the metal frame.
Both appeared Aug. 26 at Superior Court in Derby.
“These males are being looked at as suspects in the burglaries but no link has been provided as of yet,” Cota said in an email.
The 17-year-old’s name was not released because he is a juvenile. The Valley Indy is withholding the name of the 18-year-old pending the possible filing of additional charges.
FYI: Ansonia police released this information last week, but the Valley Indy didn’t publish it until returning from a three-day vacation.
Ansonia residents have been on edge since reports surfaced last month about 10 burglaries or attempted burglaries in the Hilltop area.
A block watch is being formed to keep people informed.
The first meeting is scheduled for tonight (Tuesday, Sept. 1) at 7 p.m. at Hilltop Hose Co. No. 5, 80 Pulaski Highway.
