Police: Shelton Woman Made Up Purse-Snatching Attempt

Shelton police on Wednesday charged a Providence Avenue woman with falsely reporting a robbery last month because she wanted a ride home.

Tiffany Lopez, 20, faces charges of second-degree falsely reporting an incident and misuse of the emergency 911 system.

Police said that Lopez called police about 3:15 p.m. Dec. 19 and reported that she had been walking through the parking lot of the post office on Bridge Street when a black man approached her and tried to grab her purse.

She also told cops she saw what appeared to be a handle of a black pistol in the male’s jacket pocket,” according to a prepared statement issued Wednesday by Shelton police Lt. Robert Kozlowsky.

Based on Lopez’s account, police broadcast a description of the suspect, and the alleged getaway vehicle he used to flee the scene, to police departments in the area.

Police also searched the area extensively in an attempt to locate the suspects, Kozlowsky said.
