The co-owners are brothers-in-law Paul Chawla and Gagan Sachdeva.
Sachdeva owns the building and runs the cell phone store next door, Chawla said.
The storefront next door had long stood vacant, so Sachdeva had the idea to open a liquor store on their own.
“It feels like it’s a recession-proof business, so we thought why not?” Chawla said.
Chawla, an accountant from Seymour, credited Ansonia contractor Nusret Kukaj with a floor-to-ceiling renovation that he said transformed the 1,800-square-foot space.
The location — offering easy access on and off busy Pershing Drive — is another plus, which Mayor David Cassetti noted after congratulating the family and wishing them luck during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“I’m sure everything’s going to go very well here,” Cassetti said. “You have good clientele, you have good visibility on a main drag here, a main thoroughfare.”

Also on hand from the city were Fourth Ward Aldermen Ashley Rogers and Richard Kaslaitis, Second Ward Alderman Lorie Vaccaro, Constituent Services Director Richard Dziekan, and Keith Murray, the chairman of the Economic Development Commission.
During a brief tour, the mayor was impressed by the store’s refrigerated “beer cave.”
“This will be very popular in the summer,” Cassetti predicted.
Chawla said the business will broaden its variety of specialty wines once they get a feel for customer tastes in the area.
