Register: Seymour Schools Cut Budget

Seymour schools trimmed its budget by $165,000, the New Haven Register reported Tuesday.

The reduction had to be made because voters rejected the first version of next year’s budget at the polls.

The second budget vote passed. The video in this story shows the results of the second vote being announced May 14.

The Register reports no programs or positions were cut in order to absorb the $165,000 reduction.

The school district found savings in its health insurance plan, opted not to replace a teacher who resigned, and allowed a teacher to go from full time to part time.

The article notes that the town may form a Charter Revision Committee to explore whether the annual budget vote process should be changed.

Town and school officials often lament Seymour’s low voter turnout, a reason, in part, to explore whether the annual decision should be given to an entity such as the finance board.
