Police Tuesday accused a retired Shelton teacher of sexually assaulting a minor.
David Munson, 76, of Shelton, is charged with first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor.
Munson retired from teaching in 1999 after 34 years in the Shelton school system, police said.
According to a prepared statement from Shelton police, an investigation started in October 2017 after a man told police Munson had sexually assaulted him while the man was a student at Shelton Intermediate School “years earlier.”
Police said that the victim was sexually assaulted while participating in a Shelton Intermediate School mentoring program from 2005 to 2007.
Munson was the boy’s mentor, police said.
“The victim reported being sexually assaulted by Munson on or around school grounds during the time that he was being mentored,” according to a statement from police.
“At the time of the reported incidents from 2005 to 2007, Munson was acting in the capacity of a youth mentor and was also on the Board for the Shelton Youth Bureau,” police said.
Munson was suspended from his involvement in the Youth Bureau as police launched the investigation.
Munson posted a $100,000 bond pending a court date in Superior Court in Derby Wednesday.
Attempts to reach him Tuesday were not successful.
