Scouts To Host Ed Strang Day Saturday

Calling all boys and girls of the Valley!

Ice cream making, rope bridge walking and archery shooting are a few of the free activities to be offered at the Derby Green on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. as part of Housatonic Council Boy Scout Troop 3’s Ed Strang Day.

The event has been held annually since 1994, when the city of Derby welcomed home actor Brian Dennehy to honor Scouting pioneer Edmund D. Strang, Dennehy’s former Cubmaster.

Ed Strang’s biography can be found on the City of Derby’s Hall of Fame page.

A slide show highlighting the troop’s recent cross country camping adventure and Ireland/England scout exchange trips will also be presented. Additional activities including rain pinewood derby building and racing, obstacle course, model campsite and scavenger hunt will be offered youths to introduce them to the adventures of Scouting.

The public is invited to bring worn American flags for the flag retirement ceremony beginning at noon.

Troop 3 will also be burying a time capsule on the Derby Green in recognition of their centennial year of Scouting. The troop was founded in 1914 and continues to meet the Derby 2nd Congregational Church, the founding sponsoring organization.

Representatives will be on hand to provide free membership registration to join Cub Scout Pack 3, Boy Scout Troop 3 and Venture Crew 33 to all eligible youths who complete an application with a parent or guardian present.

Current Scouts from throughout the Naugatuck Valley are also invited to attend in uniform and participate in the free activities.

The 2nd Congregational Church will be the location for the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Troop 3 Scouts Anthony Bartholomew and Colby McLiverty, also taking place on Sept. 27th at 4 p.m.

Bartholomew and McLiverty are the 294th and 296th scouts in the troop’s history to achieve Scouting’s highest honor.

Anthony completed a project installing the features of the Derby-Ansonia Dog Park and Colby’s led an effort to construct benches and memorial signs at the Derby Commons in east Derby.

All are invited to the ceremony.
