Serious Injuries In Route 8 Wreck

Two teens from Oxford were seriously injured after a car accident on Route 8 in Derby Tuesday.

The Valley Indy opted not to publish their names at this point because they are minors. The two are apparently brother and sister, according to information online.

According to an accident information summary from state police, the two teens — a boy, 16, and a girl, 13, — were both injured after the SUV they were traveling in crashed into a tree.

The 16-year-old driver was listed in fair condition in Bridgeport Hospital Wednesday morning. The 13-year-old girl’s condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital was not available Wednesday.

According to state police, the SUV — a 2004 Nissan Armada — was heading south on Route 8 near the exit 17 off ramp when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The SUV went over a guard rail and then struck the tree.

The 13-year-old girl was a front seat passenger.

Both were wearing seat belts. The vehicle’s airbags were set off during the crash.

Members of the Derby Storm Ambulance Rescue Corps took them to area hospitals.

State police noted the 16-year-old boy had a valid driver’s license for more than six months, which allowed him to drive immediate family members, per state law.

The accident information summary does not list any enforcement action, such as tickets. State police say the accident is still under investigation.

The accident happened at 4:10 p.m.

The crash shut Route 8 south Tuesday as state police investigated.

The afternoon wreck was the second of the day Tuesday in Derby on Route 8 near exit 17.

Earlier Derby Crash

At about noon, state police and emergency responders were sent to a three-car wreck at exit 17. That crash also shut the highway for a spell.

According to state police, a car was sitting at the bottom of the 17 entrance ramp waiting to merge onto Route 8 south when it was rear-ended by a second vehicle.

After rear-ending the stopped car, the driver swerved onto Route 8 and struck a pickup truck heading south, causing the pickup truck to roll over.

The driver of the pickup truck had a few cuts to his left arm, according to state police.

The driver of the car that hit both vehicles was ticketed for unsafe movement of a stopped motor vehicle, failure to maintain lane, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and failing to have insurance on a motor vehicle.
