Seymour Fire Marshal Warns Of Idiotic Fire Videos

The Fire Challenge.

Parents, have you heard about this? It is a disturbing new trend that has gone viral on social media outlets such as Facebook and YouTube.

Click here for an online history on the challenge.”

The challenge involves individuals pouring an ignitable liquid (usually rubbing alcohol) on their bare skin and igniting it, while someone else records the event to be posted online.

The reaction of the person on fire as well as the person filming are then intended to get likes” or views online.

Not only is this challenge idiotic and dangerous, but could be criminal.

This challenge” is not only putting the lives of the individuals participating at risk, but also others who may be in the same building at the time, as well as the first responders who are called to assist when a fire breaks out.

Burns being reported are on the abdomen and chest of the patients. This is of significant importance because of the likelihood of respiratory burns also occurring. This is not a joke and should not be taken lightly.

Accurate statistics are still not available though, as many of these incidents are going unreported.

In Connecticut, the State Fire Marshal’s Office as well as local Fire Marshals have been made aware of this and will be involved in investigations if these incidents are reported.

We urge all of you to talk with your children about this and make them aware that death or serious injuries could occur.

If you do come across someone participating in these sorts of activities, please call emergency responders. If you have any further questions you may contact the Seymour Fire Marshal’s Office at (203) 881‑5010.
