The 100th anniversary of World War I will be the focus of a program hosted by the Seymour Historical Society on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. The program was initially planned for last February, but was rescheduled due to bad weather.
The First World War, which lasted from 1914 to 1918, introduced such modern weaponry as the tank, the fighter plane and poison gas.
Yet, it was the old-world dynamics of a Europe still ruled by monarchs and empires that led to the long, brutal conflict.
U.S. Navy veteran and military historian Chris Bielik will offer insight into this period of territorial rivalries and unstable alliances in a program called “The Origins of World War I: The Impact of Europe’s Royal Family Ties and the Geopolitical Causes Behind the Great War.”
The Seymour Historical Society is located at 59 West Street, near the Trinity Episcopal Church.
The program is free to Seymour Historical Society members and $5 for non-members.
Doors open at 1 p.m. for those who wish to view the museum’s exhibits.
