No injuries were reported.

The Derby Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause and origin.

It was the second shed fire of the weekend in the lower Valley.

Firefighters were sent to 33 – 41 Grove St. at about 6 p.m.

The detached shed was just two feet from the house which, luckily, had a stone foundation.

Heavy smoke from the fire could be visible across the Housatonic River in Shelton, said Derby Fire Department Chief Kurt Kemmesis, Jr.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire.

Past Derby Chief Paul DeGennaro, who lives in the neighborhood, was able to get water from a garden hose on the shed before fire crews arrived, the chief said.

We had smoke in the area and fire coming from one of the doors,” Kemmesis said. The fire was contained to the shed itself.”

The chief interviewed the homeowner, who was home at the time of the fire. He recently purchased the property. He had tools, garden equipment and contractors’ tools stored inside.

Damage to the interior of the shed was heavy, Kemmesis said.

Grove Avenue is off Cedric Avenue, which connects to Roosevelt Drive. The fire was at the end of a dead-end street.

Firefighters were still on the scene as of 7 p.m.

Shelton firefighters were at a shed fire Saturday evening, according to a post on the Echo Hose Hook and Ladder Facebook page.

Shelton responded to the Derby fire Sunday as well. An assistant chief referred questions about Saturday’s fire to the Shelton fire marshal.

No injuries were reported.
