Seventy-six students were inducted into the Shelton High School National Honor Society at a reception at Grassy Hill Country Club on Thursday (Dec. 11).
The student-led ceremony began with a welcome by NHS president Ashley Chan. Following dinner, Shelton High School Headmaster Dr. Beth Smith offered congratulatory remarks.
She indicated that “these students meet the high academic and behavioral expectations as set forth in our school’s mission statement. It is now their job to be living examples of scholarship, leadership, service and character. We are proud of our inductees and expect them to continue to strive for excellence.”
Smith identified grandparents, parents and siblings who themselves were NHS members. Chan then communicated the history of the National Honor Society. The four pillars of the National Honor Society were defined by the NHS officers.
Max Wang, NHS vice-president, outlined scholarship; Caroline Steadham, NHS Secretary, described leadership; Sara Brown, NHS Treasurer, delineated service; and Wang concluded with character.
Chan presented the new members. The traditional candlelight ceremony was led by Steadham and Brown. Chan then lead the inductees in reciting the NHS oath. The induction ceremony was planned by co-advisors, Lynn Coffin and Erik Martire. School administration and members of the National Honor Society Faculty Council were in attendance, as were family members.
