Shelton Man Charged With Identity Theft, Attempted Unemployment Fraud

Prosecutors on Friday charged a Shelton man with using a former co-worker’s identity while trying to illegally collect unemployment benefits.

Rui Dasilva, 34, of Daybreak Lane, faces charges of third-degree identify theft, criminal impersonation, attempted second-degree larceny by defrauding a public community, and attempted unemployment compensation fraud.

The state Chief State’s Attorney’s Office announced the arrest in a prepared statement.

Dasilva allegedly used a former co-worker’s name, address and Social Security number in an attempt to fraudulently collect Unemployment Compensation in September 2015.

Dasilva was already collecting benefits under his own name, address and Social Security number at the time,” the statement from the chief state’s attorney’s office said.

Dasilva is scheduled to appear at Superior Court in New Britain Sept. 5. His bond was set at $25,000.

The arrest is the result of an investigation by the Unemployment Compensation Fraud Unit in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney following a complaint by the Connecticut Department of Labor,” the chief state’s attorney’s office said.

Shelton police assisted in the probe.
