Derby-Shelton Fireworks: What You Need To Know

The cities of Derby and Shelton will hold their annual dueling fireworks shows Saturday, July 5.

The pyrotechnic celebration of the 238th anniversary of our forefathers telling the Brits to take their monarchy and stuff it will start about 9 p.m. after downtown concerts on both sides of the Housatonic River.

To make sure the show is still going on before you spend an hour crawling along downtown streets in search for a parking spot, you can call the Shelton Parks and Recreation Department’s automated cancellation line at 203 – 331-4120 to check the status of the show. 

In Shelton, the fireworks will be preceded by a 7 p.m. concert from the Glamour Girls on the Riverwalk on Canal Street.

In Derby, the Kathy Thompson Band will be performing downtown.

The Shelton police also announced the following road closures for the show:

  • 1 to 3 p.m.: Canal Street from Wharf Street to Hill Street will be closed for fireworks placement.
  • 5:30 p.m.: Canal Street from Hill Street to Cornell Street will be closed for vendor setup.
  • 7:30 p.m.: Howe Avenue from Wharf Street to Center Street will be closed until the end of the event.

Shelton police said handicapped parking will be available in the municipal parking lot on Cornell Street.

And public parking will be available at the following municipal parking lots: 

  • Bridge Street by Post Office
  • Bridge Street by West Canal Street
  • Center Street across from Porky’s Café.
  • Howe Avenue next to Donut Stop.

Derby

In Derby, city police will will be closing Elizabeth Street, from Main to Third Street for the event. 

That closure to vehicles will allow staging for pedestrians. 

Additionally, the greenway parking lot off Bridge Street will be closed to all traffic, vehicular and pedestrians. 

Bridge Street, however, will remain open.

The Fire Department will have Olivia Street from Fifth to Sixth Street closed as well.
