Shelton Police Charge Four With Assault, Home Invasion Attempt

Shelton police have charged four people who they say planned to rob a local man by having a 17-year-old girl get him intoxicated.

In a prepared statement, Detective Richard Bango said on Sept. 8 a Shelton man called police saying he had been beaten in the driveway of his home.

Cops responded and found the man bleeding profusely” from a serious head wound, Bango’s statement said. The man was hospitalized for treatment.

Police said an investigation by detectives revealed that three men and two juveniles — a male and a female — had conspired to rob and assault the man.

Bango said the female juvenile, 17, called the man and had him pick her up in a plan to set him up.”

The victim said the girl made up a story, saying she had been a victim of a crime.

The female juvenile had the victim drive her to his Shelton home where she planned to get him intoxicated so he would be easier to rob,” Bango’s statement said. After the victim picked up the female juvenile, her four accomplices all followed them back to his house in Shelton. A short time later the female juvenile text messaged her accomplices informing them the victim was intoxicated and she will leave the door open.”

As three of the men approached the door of the home, the man happened to walk outside, at which point he was assaulted by all three, and one of the men hit him in the head with a fake gun.

During the assault a neighbor came outside and the three men then fled (the) scene,” Bango’s statement said.

Charged were:

  • Shawn Craig, 19, and Joseph Cahill, 18, of North Haven, on charges of attempted first-degree robbery, attempted home invasion, and first-degree assault. Craig was also charged with carrying a dangerous weapon. Both Craig and Cahill were due at Superior Court in Derby Monday.
  • Robert Torelli, 22, of Branford, on charges of attempted first-degree robbery, attempted home invasion, and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault.
  • The 17-year-old female juvenile, on charges of attempted first-degree robbery, attempted home invasion, and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault.

Police said additional arrests are expected in the case.
