Shelton Police Charge Man With Attempted ‘Carjacking’

Shelton police charged a Waterbury man with trying to carjack a woman downtown Friday.

In a prepared statement, Detective Richard Bango said the woman was parking her car in front of Family Dental on Center Street about 3:30 p.m. when a man opened her car door and attempted to get in and grab her keys.”

The woman began to scream, Bango said, after which an employee of the business came to her aid and the man, later identified as 37-year-old Gerardo Retamar, ran away.

A Shelton undercover officer was in the area at the time and Retamar was detained within minutes and taken into custody,” Bango said.

Retamar initially gave cops a fake name, Bango said, but his real identity was discovered after they fingerprinted him.

Retamar was charged with attempted carjacking, attempted first-degree larceny, third-degree burglary, criminal impersonation, interfering with an officer, and second-degree breach of peace.

He was released on a $30,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Superior Court in Derby April 7, Bango said.
